That One Special Person
I have not known this man, my cousin, Danny, all my life. My uncle and aunt divorced when Danny and I were children, and because of this bitter break up, my cousin Danny and all of his sibling were kept from this side of our family. The last time I remember seeing him as a kid, I was about five years old. Danny and I met again, finally, when I was 18 years old. We met in my favorite place in the whole wide world, my uncle Joe's lake front home in Greenwood Lake, NY. Danny had just become a police officer for the city of Montclair, NJ. We clicked immediately. He never looked at me funny which is what most people do when I first meet them. You see, I was born with a birth defect called spina bifida which left me unable to walk without the aid of crutches. From the waist up, I look pretty normal (whatever that means) but it ends there. From the waist down, my legs look strange. The muscle tone is not there, so my calves are basically non-existent. Anyway, back to Danny. Danny and I through the years contacted each other sporadically; but each time we spoke, it was as if no time had passed. At age 29, unmarried, I became pregnant. Fearful of what my family and friends would say about my decision to become a mother, I called Danny. I did this because I knew he would not judge me, and because this was someone with whom I could share my joy. I knew he would let me have my moment without asking any questions. No one else in my life had the reaction he did. He happily said, Congratulations, Cecilia! Everyone else, family and friends included, asked me all kinds of question out of fear and concern for me. Still, some of these questions hurt. They asked questions like, How are you going to do this? and Why do you always take the hard road? and the stupidest question of them all, How did you get pregnant? As is the case for everyone, my life continued to have ups and downs, and on my last down, homeless, jobless, feeling old and very, very crippled, Danny offered his help. A hand up not a hand out. Because of this amazing man, I am back on track. He has given me my options back. The possibilities are endless. I live in his house. I am attending college online obtaining a degree in psychology, helping Danny to learn the computerm and we are starting an internet business which will include my now almost 20-year old son. So you see, why Danny is so dear to me. He has made such an impact on my life. Without him, I do not believe I would have come this far. He is a Godsend, and I am so blessed that he is in my life for good! by Cecilia Zwanzig |
