Accessiblity vs. Mobility
For several years now, I have been noticing a great emphasis on accessibility to public properties for the. Because of the Americans with Disabilities Act passed in the early '90's, it is law. I know that this is very, very important and that I am benefitting from the hard work of my predecessors. I am grateful to them for making the road easier. However, I think our attention should now be focused on getting out there and availing ourselves of that right. It is very nice that corporations now have bathrooms, wide doorways and ramps to accommodate people with disabilities. The problem is there are not enough of us out there to use them. Our task is not complete. I think we have become complacent. It is much like our elections. We all have the right to vote, but many do not participate. The justification for this is, "My one vote will not make much of a difference." I tell you that you can make a difference simply by your interaction with the world.
